Visiting As Catedrais from Foz: tides, access permits and planning your day
A trip to As Catedrais begins before you leave Foz: check official access information and plan around the tide. The beach is in Ribadeo. Staying in Foz makes it an option for a day trip; beach access is arranged separately from your accommodation.

Before you set off
- Always check the Xunta's official website before choosing a date.
- An access permit, when required, is separate from your accommodation booking.
- Let the tide and sea conditions shape the day, rather than fixing the visit around lunch.
When to check access permits
When checked on 21 October 2026, the Xunta website stated that free advance reservations were required during Easter week and from 1 July to 30 September. Check the conditions for your date there: this article does not replace the official calendar, and these periods may change.
Arrange access through the official website and keep any documents the system requests. Booking O Baixo or A Trepía does not include or arrange admission to As Catedrais. If travelling with others, prepare their details only for submission to the official service when required.
Let the tide shape the excursion
Do not choose a time to go down onto the beach based on a photograph or a time that worked for someone else. Check current visitor information and follow staff instructions and signs. A permit does not guarantee that conditions will allow access to every area.
Allow plenty of time to return instead of treating low tide as a race to see everything. Stay out of closed passages and restricted areas. If the sea is rough, restrictions apply or access is uncertain, change your plan rather than pressing on for a photograph.
Arrange your day from Foz
Start with the time window suitable for the visit, then arrange lunch and the rest of the route around it. If that window is in the morning, keep the afternoon for a break or a visit to Ribadeo. If it is later, begin the day without travelling too far from your destination.
Check the route and journey time before leaving, allowing extra time to park and reach the entrance. There is no single journey time for every starting point, traffic condition and date. If you are travelling without a car, arrange both outward and return transport before requesting a visiting slot.
What to bring and how to change your plan
Bring the documents specified in your reservation, suitable footwear and clothing for the day's weather. With children, agree a meeting point and keep the group together. Discuss mobility requirements with the information service before assuming that access to the sand is suitable.
If you cannot go down to the beach, do not look for another entrance. You can visit a town or return to Foz instead. Our three-day A Mariña itinerary allows you to swap days around so that one excursion does not determine your entire stay.
Questions for planning your trip
Is the access permit included with the accommodation?
No. When required, access to As Catedrais is arranged separately through the Xunta's official website.
Can I visit the beach at any time?
Check tides, access conditions and signs. The opportunity to walk on the sand and around the formations changes with the sea; no fixed time works every day.
