Routes from Foz
Three days in A Mariña Lucense: a flexible itinerary from Foz
Three days will not cover everything, but they can bring together the sea, a coastal town and a visit inland. Use Foz as your base and choose one direction each day. Swap the order if tides, weather forecasts or visiting hours suggest a better arrangement.

Before you set off
- Day 1: Foz, A Rapadoira and the estuary, with time to rest.
- Day 2: head towards Ribadeo; include As Catedrais only after planning access.
- Day 3: Mondoñedo, or alternatively a trip towards Cervo and Viveiro. Choose rather than trying to fit everything in.
Day 1: get to know your base
Spend the first day in Foz. It can be tempting to arrive and immediately leave for the region's best-known sight, but starting with your base gives you time to settle in, rest after the journey and discover places you may want to return to. A walk around A Rapadoira and the estuary leaves room for those first impressions.
If the journey here was long, shorten the plan without hesitation. Save a longer walk for another morning. Our one-day Foz guide offers a flexible sequence, including an optional extension towards Llas without turning the outing into a race.
Day 2: Ribadeo and a coastline shaped by the tide
Give a day to the Ribadeo area. If you want to include As Catedrais, arrange the permit when required and check the tide first. Then decide how to combine the beach with the town. Leave time for lunch and walking rather than collecting beach stops along the way.
Avoid booking several consecutive activities with very little time between them. A slower arrival, a change in access or a stop you want to extend can unsettle a tightly packed day. One main visit and one optional stop are easier to enjoy than a schedule fixed from morning to night.
Day 3: head inland to Mondoñedo
For a different landscape, spend a day in Mondoñedo. Its cathedral stands in the town centre and provides a starting point for exploring. Confirm visiting arrangements if you wish to go inside. This cathedral is separate from San Martiño de Mondoñedo, which is in the municipality of Foz.
Leave part of the day free instead of adding several more towns. A leisurely lunch or a walk without an itinerary is also a way to get to know a place. You may prefer an early return to Foz, especially if you are travelling home the next day.
An alternative: choose Cervo or Viveiro
If you would rather continue west along the coast, replace Mondoñedo with a trip towards Cervo or Viveiro. Sargadelos connects with the area's industrial and ceramic history; the San Roque viewpoint in Viveiro offers views of its estuary when visibility allows. Choose according to your interests rather than treating these as compulsory additions.
With children or a preference for less driving, choose just one area. This itinerary is mainly intended for travellers with a vehicle. If using public transport, check connections and the return journey and reduce the number of stops; direct services between all these places should not be assumed.
Questions for planning your trip
Do I need to change accommodation each day?
This itinerary uses Foz as a base for return day trips. Check the journeys for your chosen destinations and means of transport.
Can I do it all without a car?
Connections between every stop are not guaranteed. Check available transport and adapt the route if you do not have a vehicle; you can spend more time in Foz itself.
